Are you interested in building a Passive House but unsure where to start? Passive House buildings are the most energy efficient homes you can build. We’re seeing increasing levels of interest in Passive House builds, and it’s not hard to understand why. Not only are they sustainable and energy efficient, they can be highly cost-effective and are recognised worldwide as the new benchmark for low energy consumption buildings.
At Craft Homes, we are Certified Passive House Trade qualified, giving you independent assurance that we can deliver to the high Passive House Standard. Passive House certification also works well alongside Homestar certification, a New Zealand based rating tool covering a broad range of sustainability features. Passive House Projects
This impressive 3 storey home achieved Passive House Plus Certification mid-2024. Originally meant to be a high-performance home, the design was upgraded to meet Passive House standards. The house has been designed to be healthy, quiet, energy efficient, and self-sufficient. Although grid tied and connected to town water, the house has a generous PV solar array, house battery, and rainwater tanks. The basement structure is insulated concrete form, and the upper floors are 140mm timber framing with a 45mm services cavity, providing two layers of insulation, and minimising thermal bridging.
This was an extra special project as it is the family home for Craft Homes Owner and Director Toby and his wife and their two boys. This home is the subject of the Craft Homes Our Healthy Home documentary and is on track to receive Passive House Premium Certification, meaning the home generates more energy than it uses. As with all Passive House projects, the performance of this home was modelled prior to construction. The home was built using Formance SIPs panels, Pro Clima smart membranes and German made high-performance windows from Neuffer, as well as structural macrocarpa timber milled on site.

Sam And Elena Mcclatchie"Right from the start of our project, Toby was focused, knowledgeable, and inspired confidence. Our project was quite complex architecturally, and demanding on the building team. The Craft Homes team never missed a beat, even on the rare occasions when revisions to align with the plan were needed. The team are hardworking professionals, committed to the project and the timetable, and justifiably proud of the quality of their work. I would recommend Craft homes unhesitatingly." |
- Lisa and Fabian Partigliani"Toby and the team at Craft Homes made the whole building process a joy and they delivered above our expectations by getting us into our home one month ahead of plan and on budget. They were responsive, transparent, great to work with and nothing was ever too difficult. " |
